Rank #1
Apple Watch Ultra 3 (GPS + Cellular, 49mm, Ocean Band)
Our Verdict
The toughest, most capable Apple Watch ever - satellite SOS, 5G and three-day battery, on the dive-rated Ocean Band and with a 20W charger in the box.
Why it's number one: Top marks for fitness tracking, smart features and build, 4.5-star reviews from Tom's Guide, TechRadar and Trusted Reviews, and the best owner rating in the category. It gives up battery life to the Garmin and the Amazfit.
The Apple Watch Ultra 3 takes everything great about the Ultra 2 and adds genuinely useful upgrades. Satellite connectivity means you can send emergency SOS messages even when you're completely off the grid - a game-changer for bushwalkers tackling remote Aussie trails. The 49mm titanium case remains built like a tank with a flat sapphire crystal that shrugs off scratches, and the addition of 5G cellular means faster data when you leave the phone behind. Battery life stretches to a genuine three days with regular use, which is remarkable for an Apple Watch with this many features running. The dual-frequency GPS remains best-in-class for accuracy under tree cover and in built-up CBD areas, and the display is the brightest Apple has ever shipped on a Watch, readable in harsh midday sun. This is the Ocean Band configuration, which is the one to get if you actually intend to use the underwater depth gauge and EN13319 dive certification - the moulded fluoroelastomer band is designed to seal over a wetsuit, where the Alpine Loop is not. Amazon AU pairs it with Apple's 20W USB-C adapter, so there is no separate charger to buy. The catch remains the price, and the 49mm case is still too large for smaller wrists. One timing note: Apple announced the Watch Ultra 4 on 9 September and it ships on 18 September, with Amazon AU pre-orders already live at $1,347. The changes are incremental - a faster S11 chip, heart-rate sampling every five seconds and battery life up from 42 to 50 hours - but it is cheaper than the Ultra 3 sits at here, so unless you need a watch this week it is worth waiting the few days. We will re-rank this category once the Ultra 4 is actually in buyers’ hands and reviewed.

How we scored it
Fitness 10: Dual-frequency GPS, ECG, SpO2, wrist temperature and a depth gauge; TechRadar calls it Garmin-rivalling and three outlets rate it 4.5/5.
Features 10: watchOS App Store, Apple Pay in Australia, 5G cellular, satellite Emergency SOS, fall and crash detection.
Battery 6: Apple rates it at 42 hours of normal use (72 in Low Power): the 37 to 59 hour band.
Build 10: 49 mm titanium case, flat sapphire crystal, 100 m water resistance with an EN13319 dive rating, and Apple's brightest watch display.
The best rugged Android watch you can buy - a much bigger battery, Snapdragon silicon and the same titanium-and-sapphire build that shrugs off Australian conditions.
Samsung released the Watch Ultra2 on 7 August 2026 and it fixes the one thing that kept the previous Ultra off the top of Android buyers' lists: endurance. The new 800mAh cell is about 35 percent larger than the 2025 model's, which turns a comfortable two days into a genuine multi-day watch even with always-on display and overnight sleep tracking running. It is also the first Galaxy Watch on Qualcomm's Snapdragon Wear Elite platform, and the difference shows in how quickly the watch wakes, how smoothly Wear OS moves, and how fast it holds a GPS lock at the start of a run. The rugged formula is unchanged, which is the right call: 47mm titanium cushion case, sapphire crystal, 10ATM water resistance and an emergency siren, so reef snorkelling, dusty trails and a summer of sweat are all well within scope. Samsung's BioActive sensor suite still covers heart rate, ECG, blood pressure and body composition, with the Antioxidant Index and Vascular Load metrics carried forward, and Gemini handles on-wrist assistance properly rather than as a demo. The price is the sticking point at just under $1300, blood pressure still needs a Samsung phone to calibrate, and the case remains chunky on smaller wrists. For Android users who want the most capable rugged smartwatch available in Australia, though, nothing else comes close.

How we scored it
Fitness 9: Dual-frequency GPS, ECG, BIA body composition and skin temperature; TechRadar and Trusted Reviews note some accuracy niggles.
Features 9.5: Wear OS with Google Play apps, Google Wallet in Australia, LTE and fall detection; some health features need a Samsung phone.
Battery 7: No rated figure on our card; the 800 mAh cell gives reviewers about three days with always-on display, the 60 to 96 hour band.
Build 9.5: 47 mm titanium cushion case, sapphire crystal, 10 ATM and IP68; not dive-certified.
The Garmin Venu 4 is the pick for fitness-focused Aussies who want world-class health tracking without being locked into Apple or Samsung's ecosystem. Garmin's sensor accuracy is simply unmatched - whether you're tracking a surf session, a trail run, or monitoring overnight recovery - and the AMOLED display is crisp and readable in direct sunlight. Battery life hits up to 8 days in smartwatch mode, which means you can actually wear it to sleep every night and forget about charging anxiety. The on-wrist ECG, pulse oximeter, and Garmin's Body Battery energy monitoring give you genuinely actionable health insights, not just pretty graphs. It works with both Android and iPhone, which makes it the ideal choice for anyone who doesn't want to be tied to Apple's ecosystem. The $899 price is premium but comparable to top-end Apple and Samsung options. If health tracking is your priority, nothing at this price comes close to Garmin's accuracy.

How we scored it
Fitness 10: Garmin multi-band GNSS, ECG, Body Battery and training readiness; Tom's Guide and TechRadar step and run tests rated it as accurate as or better than the Apple Watch.
Features 7.5: Garmin Pay and notifications on iPhone or Android, but few third-party apps, no LTE and no full-colour maps according to T3.
Battery 9: Garmin rates it at up to 12 days in smartwatch mode: the 7 to 14 day band.
Build 8: Stainless steel build, Gorilla Glass, 5 ATM and a bright AMOLED with a built-in flashlight.
Google announced the Pixel Watch 5 on 12 August 2026 and put it on Australian shelves from the 20th, and it is the most complete Wear OS watch to date. The headline change is not a spec you can read off a box. Google now post-processes your GPS trace in the cloud after the run, correcting for the reflections and dropouts that wreck a track under tree cover or between buildings, and claims roughly twice the route accuracy of the Watch 4 in exactly those conditions. Anyone who has come home from a trail run to a map that shows them swimming across a river will understand why that matters more than another tenth of a millimetre off the bezel.
The rest is a solid generational step. The 465mAh battery in the 45mm case is the biggest Google has fitted, the Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 keeps the interface fluid, and storage jumps to 64GB, which is enough to load a serious offline music library rather than a token playlist. The 1.4-inch display carries Gorilla Glass 5 and the domed design is still the best-looking smartwatch on an Android wrist. Fitbit integration and Gemini health coaching carry over and remain the strongest software story in the category.
Two things to weigh. This is the Wi-Fi model, so emergency messaging and calls need your phone nearby - the LTE version costs meaningfully more. And at launch pricing it sits within a few dollars of the Apple Watch Series 11, so if you carry an iPhone this is simply not the watch for you. For an Android user who walks, runs or rides outdoors, it is the clear pick.

How we scored it
Fitness 8.5: Fitbit sensor stack with ECG, SpO2 and skin temperature, plus what TechRadar calls super-accurate dual-frequency GPS; no dive features.
Features 9: Wear OS, Google Wallet in Australia, Gemini, fall and car-crash detection and loss-of-pulse alerts; this is the Wi-Fi model.
Battery 6: Google rates the 45 mm with its 465 mAh cell at about 40 hours with always-on display: the 37 to 59 hour band; no independent measurement on our card.
Build 8: Aluminium case, Gorilla Glass, 5 ATM and a bright Actua AMOLED.
The Apple Watch Series 11 is the default recommendation for iPhone users in Australia, and the 42mm GPS model is the one most people should buy. Amazon AU sells and ships this one itself, below the A$729 list price, which puts the current-generation watch in the bracket the SE usually occupies. The headline health feature is hypertension detection - the Series 11 watches for signs of chronic high blood pressure and notifies you when it sees something worth investigating - and Sleep Score turns overnight tracking into a night-by-night rating you can actually act on. ECG, blood oxygen and fall detection all carry over and remain excellent. This is Apple’s thinnest mainline watch yet, and the aluminium cover glass is 2x more scratch-resistant than the Series 10, which matters if you wear it through the gym and the garden. The trade-offs are the familiar ones: battery life is up to 24 hours, so nightly charging is the routine, and the GPS-only model needs your iPhone in range for calls and streaming. The 42mm case is the more comfortable fit on average and smaller wrists, and it is the size Amazon AU actually keeps in stock - the 46mm variants are mostly unavailable or sold by third-party resellers here, so you give up a little screen room to buy from Amazon directly. Everything else - notifications, Siri, Apple Pay, Fitness+, the App Store - is as seamless as it gets on iOS. One timing note: the Apple Watch Series 12 was announced on 9 September and ships 18 September, with Amazon AU pre-orders at $647 - less than the Series 11 costs here. It adds the S11 chip and the new readiness score. We have left the Series 11 ranked for now because it is the model you can actually buy and wear today, and we will revisit once the Series 12 has shipped.

How we scored it
Fitness 8.5: Apple's heart-rate, ECG, SpO2 and temperature sensing plus hypertension alerts; single-band GPS on the Series line.
Features 9.5: Full watchOS and App Store, Apple Pay, fall and crash detection; this GPS model has no cellular option.
Battery 4: Apple rates it at up to 24 hours (38 in Low Power): the 24 hours or less band.
Build 8: Aluminium case with Ion-X glass twice as scratch-resistant as the Series 10, 50 m water resistance and IP6X.
The Active 3 Premium replaced the Active 2 in February 2026 and keeps the formula that made its predecessor our budget pick, with the two numbers that matter both moving in the right direction. Battery life goes from about ten days to twelve, which comfortably clears a fortnight of commuting with sleep tracking left on, and the 1.32-inch AMOLED now sits under sapphire crystal as standard rather than as a step-up variant. The feature that still embarrasses far more expensive watches is free downloadable offline maps with turn-by-turn voice guidance, delivered either through the watch speaker or your Bluetooth headphones, backed by a multi-band GNSS fix. That makes it a genuine navigate-anywhere watch for trail runs and rides instead of a distance counter with a map picture. There are 170-plus workout modes, 4GB of onboard storage for offline music, NFC payments, 5ATM water resistance, and Zepp Coach still builds adaptive training plans that respond to the week you actually had. The catch is the same as it has always been: Zepp OS has a much thinner app catalogue than Wear OS, and while it pairs with an iPhone it does more alongside an Android phone. At $239 it costs a little more than the Active 2 did, and it is worth every dollar of the difference.

How we scored it
Fitness 7.5: Multi-band GNSS with free offline maps, optical heart rate, SpO2 and skin temperature but no ECG; TechRadar and Tom's Guide found tracking that holds its own against far dearer watches.
Features 6.5: Zepp OS with notifications, offline music, turn-by-turn maps and NFC payments through a limited set of Australian banks; few third-party apps.
Battery 9: Amazfit rates it at 12 days of typical use: the 7 to 14 day band.
Build 7.5: Aluminium case, sapphire crystal as standard, 5 ATM and a 1.32-inch AMOLED.
The Xiaomi Smart Band 10 continues the tradition of delivering an absurd amount of fitness tracker for very little money. For under $90 in Australia, you get a larger 1.72-inch AMOLED display that's noticeably brighter at 1,500 nits, heart rate monitoring, blood oxygen tracking, sleep analysis, and over 150 sport modes. The addition of an electronic compass is a nice touch for bushwalkers, and the display upgrade from the Band 9 makes a real difference for readability in bright conditions. Battery life remains genuinely exceptional - three weeks of real-world use between charges, which puts every smartwatch on this list to absolute shame. The band is comfortable, light enough to sleep in, and water resistant to 5ATM so you can swim with it. The trade-offs are the same as always at this price - there's no GPS (it piggybacks off your phone), notification handling is basic, and the Xiaomi Fitness app still isn't as polished as Fitbit or Apple Health. But for casual fitness tracking and basic smartwatch notifications, the value is simply unbeatable. If you're not sure whether you'll stick with a wearable, start here.

Features 4.5: Notifications and music control only; no payments or apps in Australia.
Battery 10: Xiaomi rates it at 21 days: more than two weeks.

We compared over 15 smartwatches and fitness trackers available on Amazon Australia on the listed specs (sensors, GPS type, water rating and display), the maker's rated battery life weighed against owner feedback, fitness-tracking accuracy as measured by professional reviewers, ecosystem compatibility, and value for money at Australian retail prices. Products are scored across four key categories: features, fitness tracking accuracy, battery life, and value. We don't buy or wear-test the watches. We check pricing on Amazon Australia daily and review rankings weekly.
Scored on Fitness and health tracking 35%, Smart features and ecosystem 25%, Battery 20%, Build and display 20%, plus owner ratings and critic reviews
This is the single most important factor. Apple Watch only works with iPhone - full stop. Samsung Galaxy Watches work best with Samsung phones but support any Android device. Google Pixel Watch needs Android 9.0 or later. Amazfit and Xiaomi trackers work with both iOS and Android, though you'll generally get a richer experience on Android. Check compatibility before you fall in love with a watch you can't actually use.
Health and Fitness Features
Every watch on this list tracks steps and heart rate, but the depth varies enormously. Premium watches offer ECG readings, blood oxygen monitoring, skin temperature sensing, and advanced sleep staging. Budget trackers stick to the basics but do them well. Think about what you'll actually use - if you just want to count steps and get notifications, there's no point paying for features that'll sit unused.
Battery Life Expectations
This is where smartwatches and fitness trackers diverge most. Full smartwatches like the Apple Watch and Galaxy Watch typically last 1-2 days between charges, which means nightly charging becomes a habit. Fitness-focused trackers like the Amazfit Active 2 and Xiaomi Smart Band 10 can go a week or more. If sleep tracking is important to you, a watch that dies every night is a real pain.
Build Quality and Water Resistance
If you're planning to swim, surf, or just don't want to worry about getting caught in the rain, look for at least 5ATM water resistance. The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is rated to 100 metres and is EN13319 certified for recreational diving. Sapphire crystal displays resist scratches far better than standard glass, which matters if you're rough on your gear. Titanium cases are lighter and tougher than aluminium or stainless steel.
Value for Money in Australia
Australian prices for smartwatches tend to run higher than the US, so value matters even more. A $1,400 watch needs to justify itself against a $500 option that covers 90% of the same features. Consider what you'll genuinely use daily - many people buy a premium smartwatch only to use it as a glorified notification mirror and step counter. Be honest about your needs and buy accordingly.
Smartwatches and fitness trackers have gone from niche gadgets to genuinely essential kit for Aussies who want to keep tabs on their health, stay connected, and maybe even leave the phone at home for a quick arvo run. The category has matured massively in 2026 - battery life is longer, health sensors are more accurate, and the software ecosystems are finally polished enough that you're not constantly fighting your wrist.
Apple still owns the premium end of the market, and the Watch Ultra 3 is the go-to for serious adventurers and outdoor types who need something that can survive the Kimberley or a dive on the Reef. Samsung's Galaxy Watch lineup has closed the gap significantly though, especially for Android users who've been stuck with mediocre options for years. Google's Pixel Watch 5 is a legitimate contender now too, with cloud-corrected GPS routing and genuinely useful Gemini AI integration making it the best pure Wear OS experience going.
At the budget end, Amazfit and Xiaomi continue to punch well above their weight. If you just want step counting, sleep tracking, and basic notifications without dropping half a grand, you've got brilliant options under $250. We've compared every watch and tracker on this list with Aussie conditions in mind, from hot summers and ocean swims to dusty trails and the everyday grind of commuting in our cities, using the makers' ratings, professional reviews and owner feedback rather than our own wear testing. All products are available on Amazon Australia with prices in AUD.
Wearables — Frequently Asked Questions
Is an Apple Watch worth it if I have an Android phone?+
No. Apple Watch only works with iPhones - there's no Android compatibility at all. If you're an Android user, look at Samsung Galaxy Watch, Google Pixel Watch, or Garmin wearables instead. Samsung's Galaxy Watch series is the closest equivalent for Android users, offering health tracking, Samsung Pay, and good app support.
What's the best smartwatch for fitness tracking in Australia?+
For dedicated fitness tracking, Garmin watches are hard to beat - they offer detailed metrics for running, swimming, cycling, and hiking with outstanding battery life measured in days or weeks. For a balance of fitness tracking and smart features, the Apple Watch (for iPhone users) and Samsung Galaxy Watch (for Android users) offer the best combination of health monitoring, notifications, and app ecosystems.
How accurate are smartwatch heart rate monitors?+
Modern optical heart rate sensors on premium smartwatches are reasonably accurate for resting and steady-state exercise - typically within 5-10 beats per minute of a chest strap. However, they're less reliable during high-intensity interval training, weightlifting, and activities with lots of wrist movement. For serious training where accuracy matters, a Bluetooth chest strap paired with your watch is still the gold standard.
Do smartwatches work with Australian health insurance apps?+
Some Australian health insurers like Medibank, AIA Vitality, and Bupa offer rewards programs that integrate with wearable data. Apple Health, Google Fit, and Samsung Health can share step counts and activity data with these programs. Check your specific insurer's app to confirm compatibility. This integration can help you earn rewards points or premium discounts based on your activity levels.
How long do smartwatch batteries really last?+
It varies dramatically by type. Apple Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch typically last 1-2 days on a single charge with normal use. Google Pixel Watch is similar at 1-1.5 days. Garmin watches with transflective displays can last 1-3 weeks depending on the model and GPS usage. If battery life is a priority, Garmin or the Apple Watch Ultra 3 (up to 3 days) are your best options. Budget fitness trackers like Xiaomi bands can last up to 3 weeks.
