Tax-deductible tech & the instant asset write-off
If you run a business, work as a sole trader, or work from home, the work-use portion of tech you buy can often be claimed at tax time. For 2025–26 the instant asset write-off lets eligible small businesses (aggregated turnover under A$10 million) immediately deduct the full work-use cost of an asset under A$20,000 — assessed per asset — bought and ready for use by 30 June 2026, rather than depreciating it over several years.
General information only, not tax advice — eligibility, thresholds and rules can change. Confirm your situation with the ATO or your accountant.

EOFY questions
EOFY tech sale FAQ
When does the EOFY tech sale start in Australia?
Most Australian retailers ramp up EOFY tech sales through June, with the biggest discounts landing in the final fortnight before 30 June. Amazon AU, JB Hi-Fi and Officeworks typically run overlapping EOFY events from early-to-mid June. We track live Amazon AU price drops on this page and refresh them daily, so the deals here reflect what is actually discounted right now.
When does EOFY end in 2026?
The Australian financial year ends on 30 June 2026. To count a purchase toward your 2025–26 return, the item generally needs to be bought and ready for use by 30 June — so the last few days of June are the cut-off for EOFY deals and tax-deductible buys.
What tech is tax-deductible in Australia?
If you use a device for work, you can generally claim the work-use portion of its cost. That commonly includes laptops, monitors, keyboards and mice, webcams and headsets, tablets, external SSDs and NAS drives, and a portion of phones and smartwatches used for work. Personal-use portions are not claimable. Keep the Amazon AU tax invoice and a record of your work-use percentage.
What is the instant asset write-off threshold for 2026?
For the 2025–26 financial year the instant asset write-off lets eligible small businesses (aggregated turnover under A$10 million) immediately deduct the full work-use cost of an asset under A$20,000 — assessed per asset — provided it is bought and first used or installed ready for use by 30 June 2026. Assets over the threshold are depreciated instead. This is general information only; confirm the current rules with the ATO or your accountant.
Can I claim a laptop or monitor I use to work from home?
Generally yes — if you use it for work you can claim the work-use portion. Items under A$300 used for work can often be claimed in full in the year you buy them; more expensive items are either written off under the instant asset write-off (if you run a business) or depreciated over their effective life. Our laptop-vs-desktop depreciation guide and WFH-tech guide walk through the detail.
Is it better to buy tech before or after 30 June?
If you want the deduction in this year's return, buy before 30 June so the asset is purchased and ready for use within the 2025–26 financial year. On price alone, EOFY is one of the strongest sale windows of the year for tech — our "when to buy and what to skip" guide covers which categories genuinely drop and which are better bought later.
